The Down Compatibility Directive from Microsoft is the best, Sony and Nintendo should do the same: Axiom Verge 2 DEV

The Microsoft Directive to be backward to the first generation is the best, says Thomas Happ.

The downward compatibility has become an important topic in the game industry. Therefore, it is not surprising that this was also the case with the coming consoles of the next generation. While Sony promises that the predominant part of the PS4 library will be playable on the PS5, Microsoft does this for the Xbox Series X, in addition to a selection of older Xbox and Xbox 360 titles. Then there is the Nintendo Switch, which has no downward compatibility, except for a limited selection of NES and SNES games that are available Nintendo Switch online subscribers.

There are many who hope that Nintendo and Sony will eventually come into the footsteps of Microsoft - and this also includes Thomas Happ, developer of axiom Verge and his continuation.

In a recent conversation spoken with Gamingbolt, Happ said that he holds downward compatibility for indispensable to make older releases not lost in history. Happ added that he looks at the guidelines of Microsoft as the best and hopes that their competitors find ways to do the same.

Culturally, I think it's important when games are not lost in history, said Happ in conversation with Gamingbolt. For consumers, this is definitely added value for the platforms on which it is available. For developers, the problem saves us to gather again and again. I know that there are some companies who want to get a boost every time a game is released for the next generation, but overall, I think that the costs of this directive are that many games will be forgotten. The Microsoft Directive to be backward to the first generation is in my opinion the best, and I hope to find Sony and Nintendo ways to do so.

In the same interview, Happ also spoke with us about the haptic controller of the PS5 and about how he could benefit the next generation's games. Read more here.

Axiom Verge 2 is available later this year for the Nintendo Switch. Although it is started exclusively, the developer hopes to start at some point on all platforms, including next-generation systems.
