Take care of Beavers in Timberborn

Timberborn is a city construction simulation game, but with beavers. When we think about it, the concept takes all its meaning. I mean, who else in the animal kingdom makes elaborate dams and other structures? Okay, birds, of course. Ants? To verify. Bees, they make rather elaborate hives. Naked taupes create underground burrows with specific rooms, but wants to play a game on naked rats-taupes? I think you miss the point.

Timberborn is a post-apocalyptic city construction game in which the beavers naturally have technologies to make the world again habitable. Being water-based construction experts, they can manufacture the types of structures and systems that irrigate the fields and feed the machines, but of course, they must first use their teeth that always grow to harvest the wood The main building material for all, multi-history pavilions to elaborate dams, hydraulic wheels and pumps. Sometimes they need to recover metal in the ruins of civilization, which you will discover as you enlarge your city and discover peripheral colonies. Currently, the game contains seven predefined cards, but players can download maps created by the community and also use the included card editor, always an excellent addition to any type of simulation game or RTS.

Also in anticipated access, Timberborn does not include all its planned features, but there has been a constant flow of updates, additions and bug fixes, so there is already a lot of content to explore and to appreciate. You play one of the two beavers, bucolic folktails and later, you can unlock the more industry-oriented iron teeth. Each faction has specific construction variations, forces and weaknesses in construction. You start with a small colony of rodents, then you slowly gather resources, use the water power nearby, recover, cultivate and harvest food, create trails and typically follow the city builder model to develop your city by adding more elaborate and specialized buildings. As cities grow up, they extend in new neighborhoods and part of the challenge is to decide whether neighborhoods will focus on an aspect of production or will be more generally autonomous. Although this requires a lot of practice and planning, it is possible to create impressive and tentacular metropolises for rodents ... uh, metropolises?

There is a day / night cycle in Timberborn who has an impact on production - because the beavers need to rest at night - as well as the growth of the population because the beavers use nocturnal hours to ... ensure the survival of The species. Seasons and periodic drought periods have an impact on the colony, and proactive planning in the event of low food and water supply is important.

Like humans, beavers have needs beyond the basics, so you end up building structures for entertainment, education and improvement of general happiness. Castors generations are born and entering the labor market and you can monitor their lives and level of contentment, and ensure their comfort and even their spiritual satisfaction. Everything is deliciously on the beaver theme and made of wood. As with most cities builders - based on rodents or not - there is a puzzle appearance in Timberborn when you find the optimal way to balance growth and sustainability, tracks and effective connections, and how to help Your beavers to lead their beaver life and to be productive workers. Many engineering challenges are naturally concentrated on water, dams and hydroelectric energy, but also on how to stack the structures to make the most of the limited space and energy.

Built on a modular system and with an artistic style in blocks for its landscapes, Timberborn usually has very nice air, with its Tudor style buildings and its machines on the wood theme that are perfect for the frame. Sometimes the creation of paths seems a little primitive and clumsy, but in general, the construction is fun and there are many options to make the buildings unique. Although environmental audio is quite minimal and there is no dubbing, the original band of Polish composer Zofia Domaradzka is fantastic. The partition of Ms. Domaradzka looks like melancholy and melodic chamber music and perfectly suits the themes of the game based on nature.

More factions, types of buildings, a real campaign or more targeted challenges will bring more depth and variety in Timberborn, but what is already in place works well. Like all good town builder, play Timberborn is a relaxing way to spend many hours, tinkering with the colony and its resident beastrs, to expand the community and usually enjoy the incessant productivity of rodents. There are many city builders with annoying humans, and not enough with beavers. Timberborn is a good first step to balance the scales.
